Full Buck Moon
Native Americans of the northern and eastern part of the United States tracked the seasons by giving a unique name to each of the full moons. This name was for the entire month that the full moon occurred in. The name of the full moon and variations of its name was used by the Algonquin Indian tribes from New England to Lake Superior.
The full moon for July is called the Full Buck Moon; it is also called the Full Thunder Moon, as well as the Full Hay Moon. In July, antlers of new buck deer push forth from their forehead in a coating of light velvet, thus the Native Americans called the full moon in July, the Full Buck Moon. July has many potent thunderstorms, and thus they also referenced this month by calling the moon The Full Thunder Moon after the numerous thunderstorms. Full Hay Moon is named for the first haying of the season.
Full moon quarters for July will be the Full Moon on July 7th at 5:21; the Last Quarter will occur on July 15th at 5:53; the New Moon will occur on July 21st at 22:35 and the First Quarter will occur on July 28th at 18:00. All times are in Eastern Daylight Time.
