Equinox is our Word for the Week

Published by mpaulin at 1:00 pm under General Sciences Edit This

The word for the week is Equinox. This word means the points in spring and autumn at which the sun’s path, the ecliptic, crosses the celestial equator, so that the day and the night are of approximately equal length. The vernal (spring) equinox occurs approximately March 21st and the autumnal equinox occurs on September 23r.

Just as an FYI, we are approaching the point in the calendar when we begin the summer season, and this is known as the summer solstice and it will occur on June 21st and in December, just prior to Christmas, we enter the winter season with the winter solstice on December 31st. Word for the week is chosen at random from my big Science Encyclopedia.
