2009 is the International Year of Astronomy ~ The Universe - Yours to Discover!  This year long event is a global celebration of astronomy and its contribution to society and culture, with a strong emphasis on education, public participation, and the involvement of people of all ages, and with events at national, regional, and global levels.  The world’s largest astronomy network is being formed with thousands of individuals in over 135 countries participating in the events.  One of the main purposes of the International Year of Astronomy is to portray astronomy as a peaceful scientific study that unites astronomers, scientists, and the public in a quest to learn more about the stars, planets, galaxies and the vastness of space outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.  In this year we commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope to study the skies and Keepler’s publication Astronomia Nova.

The International Year of Astronomy is sponsored by international space science organizations, and the United Nations. Here in the USA, it is sponsored by NASA, The Astronomical Society of the Pacific, American Astronomical Society, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, The Astronomical League, and the National Science Foundation.

http://astronomy2009.us/ is the official website for the United States and you may visit the international site at http://www.astronomy2009.org.  Both websites will list events and astronomical happenings for your education and enjoyment.  Explore Your Universe!
