On this day in 1995, in frigid parts of the U.S., motorists were advised to have cold weather survival gear in their vehicles.  30 miles SE of Ontonagan, MI, a man was found frozen to death in a snowbank near is disabled vehicle.  Temperature was as low as -15F, with a windchill down as low as -60F.

Here is a list of items you should carry in your vehicle as part of your survival gear:  cell phone and charger, blankets/sleeping bags, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, knife, high-calorie - non parishable food, extra change of clothing, small can and water proof matches to melt snow for water, sack of sand or kitty litter, shovel, windshield scraper/brush, tool kit, roap, battery jumper cables, water container, compass, and a road map.  Check www.noaa.gov or www.ready.gov to get additional suggestions for the survival gear list, as well as other winter travel and survival tips.

Weather stats for today - the temperature reached a high of 55F and a low of 35F.  There was 0.63 inches of precipitation today.  Sunrise is at 7:09 am and sunset is at 4:14 pm.  A winter storm watch has been posted for Thursday afternoon into Friday morning with the potential for an ice storm.
